Where are our swans?
By Damien Handslip
For weeks now we have had large families of Swans on our Lakes. Then, just last week, they went missing entirely. Rumours abounded, from large predators to a swanery breeding program looking for fresh blood to strengthen their swan population. I even spoke to the specialist at Abbotsbury Swanery about the disappearance. He was unable to help. I know from the leg ring on one of the birds, that he was ringed at Abbotsbury, so perhaps he led the whole lot back to the Swanery. Maybe the Queen had to entertain a whole bunch of people who were partial to Swan Pies, as was Henry VIII! Then, yesterday a couple of our last year’s cygnets turned up on our lake and ate some of my Naan bread. He was not keen on it, preferring Seeded Batch from Morrison’s. Perhaps the rest will turn up soon..... I hope so, they are such majestic birds.
