Travelling
By Damien Handslip
Every time we set out on a long journey, to me that is anything from 300 miles to 900 miles in any given route; it is the driving I prefer. The preparation is of little interest. This must be a remnant of journeys I took with my father in the 50's and 60's. In those days our cars were always second hand and always very old even back then. I distinctly remember helping Dad push an Armstrong Sidley Sapphire up Wrotham Hill in Kent. Wrotham Hill is probably the longest, steepest hill I have ever encountered. We did the same thing with an Austin 14 and a Rover 90. We used to cycle to our uncle's dairy farm in Kent, and I am sure it was quicker than our car journeys! These days we can afford a new car, so the fun has gone out of the preparation. No more trolley jacks, wheel nut spiders, grease guns, spare spark plugs, feeler gauges, ignition testers, jump leads (I do still carry this). Until recently most of the preparation centred on our little dog. We miss that little chap. We have a journey to the South of France planned in August and November. This will be the first of the French trips in our new Citroen C3 Picasso Exclusive (2009) new shape. It's only 90 bhp, but manages all the hills well. You just have to be in Cruise Control or change down early with a load on. I was outvoted by my wife (with the purse strings) and the salesman who knew she had financial control. Ah well, I shall be doing most of the driving on the French trips, so I will just have to demonstrate my swift gear changes and my command of the cruise control paddles!

Contributor's Note
You may have gathered that I am pretty old, but still capable of driving 900 miles in a day and a bit, with no accidents and within all the speed resrictions. (Thanks to TomTom) Just got my new 70+ licence!

Very nice intel. Congrats on the new license. One of my piano students returned from France and said the roses planted at the beginning of each row of grapes in the vineyards were spectacular. Do hope you have a pleasant trip and will we see some photos?
