The little one's
By Damien Handslip
Over the past month or so, it has been hard to recall how quickly families of Ducks, Geese and Swans have populated our lake. At first it was the Mallard Ducks with their tiny ducklings, then the Grey Lag Geese with their fast growing goslings and now lately the Mute Swans with their fluffy cygnets. No sign yet of the Coot families or any other water fowl. But they have only just been seen rowing across the water with a mouthful of reed fragments for their nests. It must have been a good year for the waterfowl on our lake. The families have been very large, with in excess of 5 or 6 young ones. Some predation from Foxes, Mink and Crows has been evident. If this rate of population growth carries on, we will be able to walk across the lake on a carpet of waterfowl!
