The life of Swans
Living next to a lake, as I do, I have got used to the habits of our local swans. Swans used to play a big part in the lives of Britains, with the Queen being the only person allowed to own or eat them. Nowadays, they are protected and we still have a body charged with looking after them. Each year this body takes it upon itself to collect and ring unringed swans.
The ring is a unique tag which is recorded with the place of origin and age of the swan. In our lake and surrounding lakes we have about 10 swans of whom all but two are immature. The rest are 1st or 2nd year cygnets. We had one swan who was enormous, aggresive and a bully with the rest of the waterbirds. In fact he drowned a Grey Lag goose last year. I had the unpleasant task of removing it's body from the lake. This swan has now gone, I fear dead. It's place in the pecking order has been taken over by another male. This chap is a lot milder, but still hisses at you when he is begging for bread. It is very intimidating. The spectacle of a group of swans taking off from the lake and flying over you at below roof top level is awe inspiring. The noise is surprisingly loud.

I can't imagine the Queen WANTING to eat a swan.

King Henry the VIII did so frequently and our local migrant workers are very keen on them, judging by the fact they ate most of ours recently.
