Swans are back.
By Damien Handslip
Two of our mute swans turned up and fed on granary bread I threw down for them. One was the big male with ring EUI and the other was a female T81. New noises from them. Sound like quietly barking dog & a sharp clacking from the beak. Seemed to be a call to the female from the male to go with him. After feeding they returned to the lake and drank some water. Shortly afterwards they both got out and started feeding on grass/clover. Female came over to our front plant bed, lay down and fed on the grass/clover. No indication from either swan that they saw me as a threat. In fact I was putting out washing on the big blue circular washing line when they came over to me the second time. I felt privileged to be with them. More later as winter draws in on us all...... I found out yesterday that mute swans feed on water plants, small fish, frogs and crustaceae. They can also exclude many different water birds from the lake, pond or river section they have claimed as their own. They lay from 5-7 eggs and the penn(female) sits on the nest. The cob guards the area. At this time the cob is at his most aggresive. The hatchlings (Cygnets) atay with the adults for 2 years.

I enjoy watching the swans develop over the months. While living in a condominium commmunity in South Florida, where the 7th floor condo overlooked a lake on the golf course, I was able to daily see plenty of swans, ducks, geese, herons, egrets and other birds and wildlife.
