Swans
By Damien Handslip of Flag Diesel
I had always been aware of the Royal status of swans, but it was not till recently, having watched a TV series that I realised just what that meant to the birds. Living by a lake, I see swans all the time. They do not appear to migrate like other waterfowl. Their landings and takeoffs on the lake are absolutely awesome. When they fly overhead just above my roof level, the noise is impressive and like that of no other bird I have heard. You may be able to understand my shock when, on the BBC1 programme The Tudors; we were treated to the site of a dead swan being brought in for the predilection of Henry VIII. The swan appeared to be whole with its neck and wings showing out from a massive pie dish. Henry pulled off the wings and neck and thrust his fist into the pie. He then stuffed this handful into his mouth and ate it with the remnants drooling down his chin. I asked myself how Royalty could ever have been left in charge of this magnificent bird. It is a wonder they survived. Perhaps it was because the King or Queen could only consume a small number of birds each year. Comments are invited.
