See through rock - Part Deux

In response to a number of comments on thin sections of rock, here is further elaboration.

One commentator asked how it was possible to produce transparent thin sections of rock. The secret is in the glue (Canada Balsam) and the fact the section is stuck onto a glass slide backing.

There are difficulties with certain friable rocks such as sedimentary rocks. They are so fragile as to require careful treatment and can only be worn down to a lesser degree than others.

Once a rock has undergone heat, such a metamorphosed, it becomes easier. The most difficult are dendrites. These are formed by lightning striking through sand and coming out looking like tree roots, hence the name dendrite. They are like hollow tubes and very thin walled making it difficult to work with.

Granite, basalt and the like are easier to work with. The interest for me was dealing with all the different kinds of rock specimens and coming up with a viable thin section for my scientists to work with.

Contributor's Note

Hope this lays to rest at least some of your questions. Remembering this work was done by me back and 1959 there may be some stuff I have left out.
