Our Lake
Our lake is in the middle of Worcestershire and close to Evesham. Near the River Avon, it is in a river valley. We wake each morning to the sounds of the geese flocks returning to the lakes from their overnight refuge. The noise is cacophonous with them calling to each other for directions. Later on the Swans pay us a visit, hoping for our scraps to help them get started during the day. The sight and sound of them landing and taking off is awe-inspiring. For such large birds to fly at all is a minor miracle. Later still the Coots start up with their raucous sudden noise. I jump with the noise sometimes. All the time the moorhens are wandering around amongst the reeds tending to their chicks. We have had two nestings this year. We get two kinds of Geese on our Lake, Canadian and Grey Lag. Both migrate in the winter. We see a Woodpecker hunting for worms in the grass outside and very occasionally see a Kingfisher hunting along the banks off overhanging branches. Rabbits abound and the local Fox is kept well fed with these and the young ducklings and other wildfowl chicks. We always have surprises in what we see. The site of the Great Crested Grebes fishing is stunning. The length of time they can stay underwater is amazing. When one goes under, I try to predict where it’s going to come up. I nearly always underestimate how far they get. I have been told that Cormorants have been seen, but I believe they are culled, along with the Canadian Geese. This is probably because it is a fishing lake stocked regularly with Carp by the owners. Saw my first Cormorant, black with yellow beak, taking off from the Lake yesterday. I must have disturbed it with the dog! All in all we love our Lake and are happy to be here amongst the wildlife.
