New birds on the Lake

It was Monday morning and a visit to our holiday home by the lake was required. It had been a week since the last visit and was startled by the appearance of couple of Cormorants launching themselves from the water and into the bright blue sky. Hardly had I recovered from the Cormorants than a Grey Heron took off from one of our fishing pegs, barely 10 yards from where I was, looking out of our patio windows. I never see these birds this close to our house, so I am guessing that in our absence they have crept closer to the house for better fishing. We are in a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so I thought these birds would be protected. It would seem that this is not the case. Whenever the Warden sees Cormorants he is out there with his shotgun. Canada geese are also fair game, I understand. Live and let live is apparently not recognised around here. I have no problem with these birds. They take a few small fish, but we still get some nice Carp to catch and release daily. The Lake is stocked with Carp, so that might be the owner's motivation for destroying these magnificent birds. The Herons are left in peace, if this were not the case I would be out there hunting the hunter. Perhaps I could retrieve my old RAF SLR and do a bit of winging myself!
