My obsessions
By Damien Handslip
Having a fairly unusual surname (My forename is not abundant either) I have naturally turned to my families past to find out as much as possible about the family name history. I have always turned to the past to guide me into the future. It does not always work. However, staying on track, some years ago , I went to the local library and picked up a book on surnames. I found mine and discovered it it was a Viking name, then it was Hanslief, now either Hanslip or Handslip. There were more spelt without the 'd'. The reference book continued on to read 'one Wineramus de Hanslief was one of the 50 companions who sailed to Britain in 1066 and conquered England' It carried on to reveal that the troops and companions (Knights) embarked from Normandy (home of the Norsemen (Vikings)). Over time the sons of Wineramus set out from Normandy on many expeditions to be leaders of the Crusades and wars against the Italians (Venice). A bloodthirsty lot to be sure, but also having the acumen to absorb and cultivate the cultures they took over. Absorbed is the right word. Even after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Wineramus achieved a bloodless coup of London, helped by Londoners who asked his help in ridding the City of its bloodsucking courtiers. Thus it was with all these campaigns, except the Crusades, where the Knights Templar, with their own agenda were involved. Finaly Wineramus was given a Castle and town in Buckinghamshire, England, called Hanslope. The Castle has gone, but the church graveyard contains many Handslip and Hanslips. Vikings raided South to France and Germany and of course across the North Sea so it is entirely possible that the Handslip name came down those routes even as far as Iceland, Greenland and North America. Maybe I did not need a Green Card after all!!

Most of this Intel is entirely substantiated. The North American Reference is a little 'tongue in cheek'.
