My medicine
By Damien Handslip
My Tablets My life seems to me to be ruled by my medication. I have to take a cocktail of drugs every night to stay well. The effects of not taking them can be disastrous to me or my family. The tablets are Amiodarone, Warfarin and Atorvastatin for my Atrial Fibrillation. Lithium, Sertralline and Tegretol for my Bi-polar condition. I have also to take Levothyroxine for the effects of Lithium and Pizotifen to stop migraines and Cetorizene against the effects of Amiodarone which in sunny weather brings me out in a nasty pustular rash. Firstly, I have to remember to take these drugs nightly. Then I have to remember to keep up the stock of tablets with repeat prescriptions from the doctor’s dispensary. It is a blessing to have the dispensary and the doctor in the same building. When I go on holiday I have to remember to order up extra supplies. Sometimes I wonder whether it is all worth it. I remember when I first started taking Amiodarone the terrible headaches had for at least two weeks until my system settled down. In addition I have to check my Warfarin Levels (INR) every week or two in case they have deviated from the norm set for me of 2.5. Fortunately I have my own machine to do this. The supply of test strips for this have to be kept refrigerated so I bought a mini fridge for when we were travelling. I realise there are people out there who are far worse off than myself and with more nasty medicines to take, but somehow it does not help. I often think I have had enough and threaten to stop the medication, but fortunately I have a wonderful carer in the form of my wife who brings me to my senses, so for now all is well.
