Mink
By Damien Handslip of Flag Diesel
For me, the latest thing to raise its head on our lake is a family of mink. Years ago mink were released from mink farms by a bunch of well meaning but misguided people from the animal rights brigade. Now there are many areas of the country where these ferocious creatures slaughter our native waterfowl. From my lakeside home I see these animals skirting around the margins of the lake. They have decimated families of waterfowl, including moorhens, coots, reed warblers and others. Fortunately this year I have observed many waterfowl pairs breeding a second family. Whether this is due to the weather or predation I do not know. It remains to be seen whether the mink will also breed twice in the year. We are next to a Site of Special Scientific Interest so there is a limit to what can be done as far as reducing the mink population. If they can cull the Canada Geese then perhaps culling mink should be considered. I may report on this again next year for those who are interested.
