Haiti and more.....
By Damien Handslip of Flag Diesel
The media, as usual, has done a great job of downplaying the role of many nations in trying to help the victims of Haiti's latest disaster. They have done nothing but carp on about how many days it has been since the earthquake and how nobody in Haiti had received aid and no victims were being recovered. Nothing was said about the Haiti Premier who has now surfaced and could not be found for comment. Nothing was said about about the doctor's and nurses who had rushed to Haiti's aid, both individually and as part of great organisations like Medecin Sans Frontier. Not much said about what the servicemen of the USA were doing. Reconstructing an airport to land vital supplies, providing a hospital ship for treating the injured. Providing security for the aid workers, was also vital. At the moment there is no objection to the USA taking over the administration of the island. With Haiti's chequered history of violence upon their population. This was famously illustrated in the day's of Papa 'Doc' Duvalier and the "Ton Ton Macoute". I do sincerely believe that Haiti ought to be looked after like Puerto Rico, almost a 51st state of the Union. They will be a big drain on resources, but nowhere as much as if they are cast loose again and have a natural disaster or disease or revolution happen yet again. We need to get the place bulldozed, reconstructed to earquake standards and an infrastructure put in place less prone to deprivation. Good water, sanitation and perhaps an emigration programme to reduce the burden on the island economy are also vital. Will we see the media step up to the plate and push for this kind of reform? I do not know....they have a very short attention span. But it would be great wouldn't it?

Contributor's Note
I have watched the news every night since the earthquake and finally felt moved to write something.......about the media. What a bunch of posers for the most part. Orla Guerin was one of the exceptions, usually turning up in these situations, most of the others just wanted to get out of the studio for a few days.

You certainly choose your words well, Frederick. Thanks for your comment. I know that deep down it is support :)
If I had to choose between aid going to Haiti and Media going to Haiti the aid would win. I think with the aid getting priority as it should I think the media has been been doing a pretty good job considering their limited access.
CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY
Perhaps they should also have considered giving help between their posturing.
