France here we come - ready or not!

By Damien Handslip

Soon the family, me and the missus, will be on the way from the shores of Albion to the land of onions, garlic and olives.

Where we are going is about as far south as you can get in France without falling into the med.

First there is the matter of selling up here. Then the removal van organising, then our own packing into car and roof box. As on previous return trips to France I will finish the packing of the car, go back to the front door and found my ever loving has found another load almost as big as the load. Rearrangement, discarding, repack is done and eventually we are on our way to Dover.

The TomTom SatNav keeps telling me I have to go by the tunnel, when I have booked a ferry! Ignore that, I know how to get to Dover without the TomTom anyway. Switch it off until I arrive in Calais.

Probably miss the Boulogne exit and do an extra 24 miles getting back from Dunkirk!

Everything will be sweet on the A16/A28 until we get to Rouen when the TomTom has a brainstorm and takes us through all the side streets until it spits us out onto the A13.

It should be plain sailing from there through Evreux, Dreux and Orleans then on towards Limoge to Toulouse on the A20/A62.

Then it will be on the home straight from Toulouse (watch for the 90 kph speed limits) to Carcassonne, off at Exit Carcassonne Ouest and on by the famous French B roads to our bijou residence just 250 meters from the chateaux.

Many French Chateaux are still owned by the original occupants, but most have sold off bits of their land for housing development and high class restaurants and apartments for tourists.

This particular owner occupant some generations ago became so popular (NOT!) with the villagers that he built himself a hidden escape tunnel, to avoid being caught and punished.

When we finally arrive, the neighbours have volunteered to help us unload the main removal van. That will be such a boon, for although I enjoy driving, I will be more than a little fatigued.

And so I wish you all a fond farewell well in advance, before I pick up on Quondio once in France.

FLAG Diesel, my Solenoids and Actuators business will continue unhindered.

Contributor's Note

This epic journey has been a long time in the planning, and both my wife and I are now looking forward to the completion.

For thos of you who screened this Intel and
a) Have no idea where France is
b) Have no idea what a SATNAV is
c) Think it is common knowledge as to where our local chateaux is
d) Think driving down through France to the south is plain easy.
e) The concept of removing to another country is hard to understand

Should get over themselves.
Perhaps see the humour in this little tale.

I shall certainly be plugging into our "LiveBox" courtesy of France Telecom.
Then when all the trivial stuff is done and I get my first siesta, I shall login to Quondia and try and get my sluggish brain cells moving into high gear, I will bore you all with stories of our fig tree and its prolific yield. Loads of fig jam!
Then when time has passed I will bee planning another trip. This one to the countries bordering the med, from the Cap de Lion to the Adriatic, with a couple of islands including Corsica. Marseille will be a first focus due to the ferry to Corsica.
I hope to make it as far as Venice then return via a different route.
My wife and I will both be retired when we leave for France so hopefully the strain of the last 10 years of my illnesses will lift from her shoulders and allow her to enjoy life s lot more.

Thanks for the comment - Damien
