Annual Pilgrimage
By Damien Handslip of Flag Diesel
Last week began the annual pilgrimage from our lakeside "holiday" home to temporary housing in the Severn Valley, 12 miles up the road. This pilgrimage is brought about by the fact that we can't find residential housing anywhere that competes with our situation at the Springs Lakeside Holiday Home in Worcestershire. We have a lovely 40' x 20' Wood-clad chalet situated right by a lake. Eventualy we will be able to alternate between this home and our lovely brick-built home in the South of France. As soon as my wife quits work in 2011 we will do 6 months here and 6 months there, give or take a month or so. When I sit out on the deck overlooking the Lake, I am awed by the waterfowl and the scenery. Then I think about the kitchen terrace in France where we have breakfast, lunch and tea every day. Both houses are well furnished and everything is how we wanted it, eventually. Now I sit in our little rented studio cottage, tapping away on the keys of my wife's laptop, composing this Intel. Shortly, I will send it off courtesy of a new Mobile Broadband system. It's slow, but I can at least keep up with my business and personal email obligations. The mobile comms side of the broadband marketplace is a mystery to me. For instance how come young people can race around making mobile calls withought waiting a few nanoseconds for a reply, when I can only get my email down the line in what is an eternity. I expect the anwswer has to do with what I am prepared to pay the like of BT for the service. In France I have my Livebox, which gives me a high speed connection and then when I am ready to come home I can switch off the service and pay nothing until I am needing the service again, some 9 months later. Not available in the UK of course, we still have to pay for a service we don't use. Well there are numerous comparisons to make, but I have no more time to spend. Anybody with comments on this and other aspects of my Intel, please feel free to make comments. Especially in relation to Mobile Broadband. |
